Abstract
Aliphatic carboxylic acids substituted in the 3-position by halogen are obtained by oxidizing the corresponding alcohol with an alkaline agent, a : b -Unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids are produced by splitting off halogen halide from the halogen-substituted carboxylic acids obtained. The alcohols used are, for example, those obtained according to Specification 465,467. In examples: (1) a cold aqueous solution of potassium permanganate and sodium carbonate is poured onto 3-chlorobutanol, and the mixture stirred at room temperature. The mixture is filtered, the filtrate strongly acidified with hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride added, and b -chlorobutyric acid extracted with ether, which is distilled off; (2) b -chlorobutyric acid obtained as above is boiled with caustic soda solution, the solution acidified with dilute sulphuric acid, and the crotonic acid formed steam-distilled. The acid is extracted with ether; (3) g -chloropropanol is mixed with solutions of sodium carbonate and potassium permanganate and the mixture stirred at room temperature and then filtered. The filtrate is acidified with hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether after addition of sodium chloride. The ether is evaporated off and the b -chloropropionic acid distilled under reduced pressure; (4) the b -chloro propionic acid so obtained is boiled with potassium carbonate solution, the mixture acidified with sulphuric acid and the acrylic acid set free is steam-distilled. The solution may be neutralized with sodium carbonate. The Provisional Specification is not limited to the oxidation of the halogen-substituted alcohols by an alkaline oxidizing agent, and in an example, 3-chlorobutanol is oxidized by a solution of potassium bichromate and sulphuric acid. The chlorobutyric acid formed is steam distilled. g -Chloropropanol may be oxidized with bichromate in an analogous manner.
