Abstract
An alkali salt of an a -alkoxyisobutyric acid is prepared by reacting cold chloretone (prepared by the condensation of acetone with chloroform) with an alkali hydroxide in the presence of an alcohol and stopping the reaction before the salt is decomposed. The free acid is obtained by acidification with a mineral acid, and may be esterified with an alcohol in the presence of sulphuric acid, and of a polymerisation inhibitor-if necessary, preferably removing water by azeotropic distillation. In the examples: a -methoxy-, a -ethoxy- and a -butoxy-isobutyric acids respectively are prepared by reacting with chloretone: (1) potassium hydroxide and methyl alcohol: (2) sodium and ethylalcohol or potassium hydroxide and ethyl alcohol (3) sodium and butyl alcohol or potassium hydroxide and butyl alcohol. The acids are esterified to give methyl-a -methoxy-, ethyl-a -ethoxy- or butyl-a -butoxy-isobutyrates as indicated above, a proportion of the corresponding methacrylic ester being formed.
