Abstract

Animal and vegetable glycerides are treated with aliphatic monohydric alcohols having less than six carbon atoms, the liberated glycerine is removed and the resulting esters sulphated. The alcoholysis may be effected in the presence of acid or alkali or according to the process of Specification 563,481. Alcohols containing alkoxy or sulphonic groups are mentioned as well as the unsubstituted alcohols such as methyl and propyl alcohol. In examples: (1) castor oil is treated with methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid and also sodium hydroxide and the resulting mixture of esters, after removal of glycerine, sulphated; (2) coconut oil is treated with propyl alcohol in the presence of hydrochloric acid, and the propyl esters, after removal of glycerine, sulphonated with sulphuric acid and acetic anhydride; (3) cotton seed oil is refluxed with methylated spirit and 50 per cent sulphuric acid, the glycerine removed, and the remaining esters distilled in vacuo and sulphonated in trichlorethylene with chlorsulphonic acid.
