Abstract

Fatty esters containing unesterified hydroxyl groups are prepared by reacting a triglyceride of a fat or fatty oil with a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst whilst removing water vapour from the reacting medium. This may be effected by a stream of an inert gas or by vacuum distillation. Suitable catalysts include soaps, alcoholates and alkaline materials which are capable of reacting with fatty acids to form soap. In examples: (1) coconut oil is reacted with glycerin in the presence of soap with nitrogen passing through the mixture; (2) hydrogenated cottonseed oil is reacted with ethylene glycol in the presence of soap flakes with nitrogen passing over the mixture; (3) cottonseed oil is reacted with glycerin in the presence of sodium acetate with nitrogen passing over the mixture; (4) hydrogenated cottonseed oil is reacted with glycerin in a vacuum vessel. The products may be used as emulsifying agents for mixtures of water and fatty or mineral oils, for instance in the manufacture of cosmetics.
