Abstract
543,604. Soap and soap compositions; glycerine. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 19, 1940, No. 7109. Convention date, April 19, 1939. [Class 91] [Also in'Group IV] Fatty glycerides are re-acted with 0.1-0.5 per cent. of alkali and 1.2-1.75 equivalents of a monohydric alcohol of 1-5 carbon atoms, and the alkyl esters, after separation from the glycerine and after fractional distillation, if desired, to remove the lower-boiling esters, are saponified with caustic soda or potash, which may be in methyl or other alcoholic solution or may be finely-ground and used with little or no alcohol, or may be a 50 per cent. aqueous solution. The mixed alkyl esters of unsaturated acids, e.g. from cotton-seed oil, may be hydrogenated before saponification so as to form palmitate and stearate soaps. Examples describe the treatment of coconut oil, and in one case cotton-seed oil ; in the latter case the soap is mixed with titanium white and glycerol monostearate and monooleate. Other oils mentioned as suitable initial materials are olive, palm, sardine, castor, whale and linseed oils, tallow, stearin and cocoa butter. Specification 125,153, [Class 91], is referred to.
