Abstract

547,667. Textile oils. GOODINGS, A. C.; MARSHALL, H. B., and LEMON, H. W. Dec. 18, 1940, No. 17855. Convention date, Dec. 21, 1939. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Addition agents for mineral base oils to form a composition for use as a textile oil, comprise diesters of polyhydric alcohols having at least three hydroxyl groups in which one hydroxyl group is esterified with a long chain fatty acid of at least ten carbon atoms, and a second hydroxyl group is esterified with a short chain aliphatic acid of less than six carbon atoms. The polyhydric alcohol is preferably glycerol. The long chain fatty acid is preferably saturated but in, any case should not contain more than two double bonds. The short chain aliphatic acid preferably does not contain more than four carbon atoms. Suitable long chain fatty acids are oleic acid and the acids of naturally occuring non-drying oils including the vegetable fatty oils such as coconut, the animal oils such as neatsfoot and lard oils as well as mixtures of such acids particularly the mixed acids obtained on hydrolysis of such naturally occurring oils. Of the short chain aliphatic acids, acetic is the preferred acid. The preferred polyhydric acohol is glycerol but erythritol and mannitol may also be used. The addition agents are added to a base oil comprising refined mineral oils preferably in amounts of 5-7 per cent. by volume of the base oil, but amounts up to 20 per cent. may be used. The mineral oils used should have a gravity A.P.I. of 23-36, a viscosity (Saybolt Universal at 100‹F.) of 50-250 and a pour point of 0‹F.-50‹F. Oils which have been subjected to a fuming acid treatment are particularly suitable. In addition to the agents above referred to there may also be added to the mineral oil base liquid diglycerides of long. chain fatty acids of at least 12 carbon atoms, such as neatsfoot-diglyceride. Examples of addition agents according to the invention are coconut-acetic diester of glycerol, neatsfoot-acetic diester of glycerol, and neatsfoot-lactic diester of glycerol. The preparation of the coconut-acetic diester of glycerol is carried out by first forming coconut monoglyceride using an excess of glycerol, the excess of glycerol is removed by extraction with water and the coconut monoglyceride is then acetylated with acetic anhydride. Alternatively the coconut monoglyceride may be directly esterified without removing the excess of glycerine, in which case some acetic diglyceride is formed which has to be removed by extraction with water.
