Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a carboxylic ester, which is almost colorless and is useful as a cosmetic base oil, plasticizer, perfume, lubricant, etc., economically in high yield, by the esterification of the starting carboxylic acid, which is pretreated with hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate, with an alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: Preferably 0.5W3.0pts.wt. of hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate is added to 100pts.wt. of the starting carboxylic acid (carboxylic acid selected from 4W22C synthetic, animal, and vegetable fats and oils). The mixture is heated preferably at 60W120°C for 20W180min under stirring. The carboxylic acid is subjected, after the treatment, to the conventional esterification with an alcohol to give an almost colorless carboxylic ester, in high yield, without troubles, e.g. environmental pollution. The above ester has a better color shade than the one decolorized with an oxidizing or reducing agent, and has an excellent thermal stability and storage stability.
