Abstract

A lubricating composition suitable for yarns, filaments and the like which consist of or contain organic derivatives of cellulose, comprises mineral oil, a softening agent for the cellulose derivative, an alkylated phenol, a higher fatty acid and an alkylolamine. The alkylated phenol may be wholly or in part replaced by an acylated ester of ricinoleic acid such as butylacetyl ricinoleate or an acylated vegetable oil such as the formyl, acetyl, propionyl or butyryl esters of a vegetable oil, particularly acetylated castor oil, while the alkylolamine may be in part replaced by a non-hydroxylated amine of similar boiling point and vapour pressure such as triamylamine or butyl diamylamine. The softening agent is a sulphated alcohol or a sulphonated or oxidized vegetable oil such as sulphonated olive oil or oxidized peanut, sperm, olive or teaseed oil, while the alkylated phenol may be diamyl phenol or the dibutyl or diamyl derivatives of cresols, xylenols or monochlorophenols. The higher fatty acid and the alkylolamine, for instance, oleic acid and triethanolamine, may be present in equivalent proportions. If desired, a small amount of a higher alcohol, for example oleyl alcohol, may be added as a blending agent. Examples are given of lubricating compositions containing white mineral oil, oxidized peanut oil, oleic acid, triethanolamine, one or both of 2.4-di-tertiaryamyl phenol and n-butyl acetyl ricinoleate and in some instances one or more of acetylated castor oil, octadecenyl amine and the diethanolamide of coconut oil fatty acids. Details are given of (a) materials consisting of or containing organic derivatives of cellulose which may be treated; (b) the lubrication process itself; and (c) various after-treatments to which the materials may be subjected. Specification 346,678 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to glycerol acetyl ricinoleate as an acylated ester of ricinoleic acid and to acetylated olive and peanut oils as acylated vegetable oils. It also contains two additional examples of lubricating compositions comprising oxidized peanut oil, diamyl phenol, butyl acetyl ricinoleate or acetylated castor oil and a Twitchell oil made up of mineral oil, sulphonated oil, vegetable oils and soap. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
