Abstract

A composition for lubricating textile fibres and textile machinery comprises refined mineral oil having a Cleveland Open Cup flashpoint above 250 DEG F. and up to 50 per cent by weight, based on the mineral oil, of one or more polyethylene glycol mono-ethers or mono-esters chosen from (a) mono-ethers (other than those specified in sub-paragraph (a) of Chain 1 of Specification 750,122) of monohydric alkyl phenols or alkyl naphthols, the alkyl phenols or alkyl naphthols containing 6-30 carbon atoms in one or more and at most 4 alkyl radicles and the mono-ethers having a polyethylene oxide chain of 2-25 mols of ethylene oxide, (b) mono-ethers of saturated or unsaturated monohydric fatty alcohols containing more than 8 carbon atoms in the molecule and having their OH group on an a, b or g carbon atom, or of sterols, or of alcholic material obtained by hydrolysing wool wax, the mono-ethers having a polyethylene oxide chain of 13-25 mols of ethylene oxide and (c) mono-esters of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, or of monobasic acids occurring in wool wax or in distilled wool grease stearines or oleines and containing at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule, or of alkyl benzoic acids containing 8-20 carbon atoms in one or at most 2 alkyl radicles, or of naphthenic acids, or of alkylated monobasic cyclic acids (or hydrogenated derivatives thereof) which occur in wood, gum and liquid rosins, the mono-esters having a polyethylene oxide chain of 13-25 mols of ethylene oxide. The lubricating composition may also contain other specified classes of (i) polyethylene glycol mono-ethers and mono-esters, (ii) polyhydric aliphatic alcohol partial esters, (iii) alcoholic materials and (iv) fatty acids; furthermore it may contain fatty oils (which may be blown), wool fat, silica sol, coupling agents, emulsifying agents, detergents, solvents, antioxidants and emulsion stabilizers. The lubricating composition may be applied as an aqueous emulsion, particularly when silica sol is an ingredient, and may be scoured from textile materials. Solvents specified are cyclohexanol, methylcyclohexanol, water, methyl cyclohexanones and chlorinated hydrocarbons, while antioxidants mentioned are phenols, arylamines and quinones. Emulsion stabilizers referred to are stearamide, sodium alginate and sodium cellulose oxyacetate. Other specified substances which may be ingredients of the lubricating composition are ammonia, soda ash, fatty soaps (e.g. triethanolamine or sodium oleate), neutral salts of sulphonated fatty oils, sulphated alcohols, alkaryl sulphonic acids, dialkyl sulphosuccinic acids or petroleum sulphonates, cellulose ethers and sodium cellulose carboxylates.
