Abstract

Lubricating greases comprise a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion, sufficient to form a grease, of a mixture of soaps the acid components of which comprise by weight 15 to 80% of wool grease fatty acids and the balance aliphatic acids of at least 12 carbon atoms and the metal component of which comprises either lithium or a mixture of lithium and sodium in a molar ratio between 15 to 1 and 3 to 1 provided that when there is a mixture of preformed soaps of lithium and sodium there shall be a lithium soap of an aliphatic acid and sodium soaps of wool grease fatty acids. The mineral oil should have a viscosity above 1 e.g. 60 to 6,000 SUS at 100 DEG F. and may be naphthenic or paraffinic. Wool grease fatty acids are obtained by the acidification of the soap solutions obtained in the manufacture of lanolin. The other aliphatic acid may be for example a stearic, hydroxy stearic, oleic, palmitic, hydroxy palmitic, myristic or hydroxy myristic acid or a mixture of such acids include naturally obtained materials such as vegetable, animal and fish fatty oils and their hydrogenated fatty derivatives, e.g. stearin, hydrogenated tallow or soya bean fatty acids, hydrogenated fish oils and partially hydrogenated marine, vegetable and animal oils. The greases can be prepared by incorporating preformed soaps in the oil or by forming the soaps in situ and the product may be slightly acid (corresponding to up to 0.5% by weight oleic acid) or alkaline (up to 0.2% lithium hydroxide). Optional ingredients are antioxidants, e.g. amines, phenols and sulphides, and lubricity improving agents, e.g. free fat, fatty acids, esters of alkyl and/or aryl acids, sulphurised fats and lead soaps. The grease may contain 5 to 30% by weight of the soaps and up to 10% of the optional ingredients.
