Abstract

In the manufacture of greases and lubricating oil compositions containing lithium soaps, a quantity of a free soap-forming acid containing at least 16 carbon atoms in the molecule in solution in a lubricating oil is contacted with an equivalent quantity of a normal oxide of lithium at a temperature of 30 DEG to 100 DEG C., preferably 35 DEG to 45 DEG C., for a time sufficient to react at least 90 per cent. by weight of the oxide of lithium and the acid to form a soap. The lithium compound includes Li2O, LiOH and hydrates of the latter. The water of reaction is subsequently removed from the lubricant by heating to a temperature not exceeding 110 DEG C. The fatty acids specified comprise stearic, palmitic, arachic, hydroxy-stearic, oleic, and ricinoleic acids and mixed fatty acids from tallow, lard, seed oils, wool fat, naphthenic acids derived from petroleum oils, rosin acids, tall oil acids, acids produced by the oxidation of paraffin wax or by the controlled oxidation of hydrocarbons and acids from montan wax and beeswax. The lubricating oils are preferably of low aromatic content, i.e., solvent-extracted oils and also preferably of aniline point of at least 80 DEG C. with a difference in aniline point before and after sulphation not exceeding 15 DEG C. A mineral oil prepared by solvent extraction from a gas oil fraction is exemplified.
