Abstract

541,749. Lubricants. KILBURN, B. E. D., (National Oil Products Co.). April 26, 1940, No. 7542. [Class 91] [Also in Groups IV and V] Lubricants for textile materials comprise a blown oil or similar substance and an unblown ester of a monohydric alcohol with a fatty or naphthenic acid having eight or more carbon atoms. The composition may be employed as such or it may be dissolved in an organic solvent or dispersed or emulsified in an aqueous medium. The composition may contain an emulsifying agent, or an alkaline substance may be added to saponify a portion of it and thus form a soap, which acts as an emulsifier. The blown oil or similar substance may be an animal or vegetable oil, fat or wax which has been partially or completely oxidized or polymerized. This constituent gives the fibres the desired tackiness. The blown oil may be olive, rapeseed, rice-bran, teaseed, corn, neatsfoot, sperm, cotton-seed, castor, lard or other fatty oil or wax, or a mixture of these. The alkyl ester constituent which imparts lubricating properties may be a methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or amyl ester of stearic, oleic, palmitic, lauric, caprylic, capric, ricinoleic or linoleic acid, or of a naphthenic acid containing 8 or more carbon atoms. The compositions may contain other ingredients, e.g. oils, waxes, glycerides or glycol esters of higher fatty acids, and sulphonation or sulphation products thereof. Alkalies, carbonates, borax or triethanolamine may be added to render the composition dispersible in an aqueous medium. In examples, worsted fibres are sprayed with a mixture of methyl oleate and blown teaseed oil, or with a mixture of butyl stearate, blown rice-bran oil and blown teaseed oil. The composition may be removed from the treated fibres when desired by scouring.
