Abstract

Textile fibres are lubricated by a blend of mineral hydrocarbon oil and oleine acids, upon which enhanced scourability by alkalis has been conferred by the addition of (a) a partial ester of a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol containing one and at most two free hydroxy groups and at least one hydroxy group esterified by a long-chain fatty or hydroxy fatty acid, or a wool fat acid, or a liquid rosin acid, or (b) a long-chain fatty alcohol, or a sterol, or wool fat alcohol, or (c) a mixture of such esters and alcohols, the mineral oil being present in the proportion of from 80 to 20 per cent of the composition, the oleine acids from 10 to 25 per cent and the scouring assistant in a proportion of from 5 to 50 per cent of the mineral oil. The scouring assistant may be derived from ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol or any other aliphatic alcohol containing at least two hydroxy groups, partially esterified with lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, or ricinoleic acids, or a wool fat acid, or any acid from liquid resin. Mixed partial esters may also be formed by reacting triglyceride fatty oils such as coconut oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, groundnut oil, olive oil, or lard oil with a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol or mixture of such alcohols. Small amounts of soap or a sulphonated oil such as sulphonated castor oil may be added, and also antioxidants and emulsifying agents. Examples are given showing the results of scouring trials with lubricants, containing 39 per cent liquid paraffin, 56 to 59 per cent oleine, and 2 to 5 per cent of monoglycerides from groundnut oil, monoglyceride of oleic acid, monoglycol ester of oleic acid, oleyl alcohol, wool fat alcohols, and mixed monoglycol and mono- and di-glyceryl esters from groundnut oil.
