Abstract

The invention comprises partial esters of fatty acids having 12-22 C atoms with polyether polyols made by condensing one mole of sucrose with 10-30 moles of an alkylene oxide having 2-4 C atoms, no more than three-eights of the hydroxyl groups of the polyol being esterified. The esters may be made by esterifying the acid with the polyol but are preferably made by treating the polyol, at below 350 DEG C., and above 100 DEG C., with a lower alkyl ester of a fatty acid of 12-22 C atoms in an amount of 0.5 to 3, especially 1-3, moles of ester per mole of sucrose. The term "lower alkyl" refers to the alkyl groups of those alcohols which are sufficiently volatile to be evolved during the inter-esterification. Indicated acids include lauric, stearic, oleic and ricinoleic acids and branched chain acids and mixtures of acids obtained from natural glyceride fats and oils e.g. cottonseed, coconut, soya and lard oils. Ethylene, propylene and 1,2-butylene oxides are specified alkylene oxides. The sucrose polyether polyols are preferably prepared at 70-270 DEG F., under pressure of up to 200 p.s.i. in the presence of 5-30% by weight of water, based on the sucrose, and sodium hydroxide. The products are surfactants which may be dispersed in water and, in some instances, in cold water. Examples are provided of the preparation of the esters by inter-esterification methods.
