Fats and fatty oils, purifying.-Fats and oils are neutralized by treating a solution of the fat in a volatile solvent with an alkaline base or salt. and then extracting the soap with alcohol, diluted acetone, or other solvent not miscible with the volatile solvent. Benzine, carbon disulphide, and chlorhydrocarbons are specified as suitable solvents. In an example, 50 kilograms of oil of illipe are dissolved in 250 litres of benzine and located at 30‹ C. with the theoretical quantity of dry sodium carbonate or caustic soda solution required to neutralize the free fatty acids. 100 litres of 50 per cent ethyl alcohol are then added, and the mixture agitated, heated to 40-45‹ C.. and allowed to stand. The solutions are drawn off separately, and the solvents removed by distillation.
