Abstract
The unsaponifiable matter is recovered from a glyceride oil containing said matter by treating with alkali a solution comprising 3 to 50 per cent of said unsaponifiable matter, dissolved in a mixture of glycerides of said oil, and free fatty acids of said oil or soaps of said acids, whereby to convert the glycerides and any free fatty acids present into soaps, making up the mixture of soaps and unsaponifiable matter in a proportion of 100 parts by weight upon a water-free basis into solution in water in a proportion of 146 to 1460 parts by weight and a lower monohydric, saturated, alkyl alcohol containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms, in a proportion of 61 to 610 parts by weight, feeding the resultant soap solution countercurrently with a solvent of unsaponifiable matter insoluble in the soap solution in an extraction zone in a proportion of 1 to 10 parts by volume per part by volume of solution, drawing off the solution of unsaponifiable matter in said solvent at the end of the extraction zone opposite the end of introduction of the solvent and evaporating the solvent to recover the unsaponifiable matter contained therein. As solvent for the unsaponifiable matter there may be used naphtha. Methyl or isopropyl alcohol may be used as the alcohol. A soap dispersion produced from 4 to 30 per cent of unsaponifiable matter of soybean oil and 5 to 40 per cent of free fatty acids of soybean oil by treatment with alkali and in which water is present in a proportion of 277.5 to 2775 parts and the alcohol is present in a proportion of 92.5 to 925 parts per each 200 parts of the mixture, may be utilized. Prior to making up the mixture of soaps and unsaponifiable matter the soaps may be acidified to liberate free fatty acids, the free fatty acids selectively distilled off from the unsaponifiable matter and the still residues subjected to saponification with alkali in order to convert the free fatty acids therein to soaps. A solution resulting from the solvent extraction of soybean oil with furfural to produce a mixture of highly unsaturated glycerides, sterols (e.g. stigmasterol), inhibitors (mainly tocophenols) and free fatty acids, from which the glycerides are removed by extraction with naphtha and the furfural is removed by evaporation, may be utilized as starting material. Specifications 625,674, 658,967 and 687,473, [all in Group III], are referred to.
