Abstract

Brittle hard fats suitable for use in suppositories are prepared by esterifying at least one C10-18 saturated fatty acid with such an excess of glycerol that the resulting mixed ester has a hydroxyl value from 48 to 100 inclusive. Examples describe esters prepared from palm kernel fatty acids (freed from lower acids), lauric acid, a lauric acid/myristic acid mixture, a lauric acid/palmitic acid mixture, a stearic acid/soap stock acid mixture and a lauric acid/myristic acid/palmitic acid mixture.ALSO:A suppository incorporates a brittle hard fat prepared by esterifying at least one C10-18 saturated fatty acid with such an excess of glycerol that the resulting mixed ester has a hydroxyl value from 48 to 100 inclusive.
