Abstract

The subsequent removal of higher melting fatty material from glyceride oils is facilitated by the addition of 0.001-1%, by weight of the oil, of a saturated C14- 22-fatty acid ester of glucose, gluconic acid or glucono-d -lactone. The fatty acyl group present in the additive is preferably derived from palmitic and/or stearic acid; preferred additives are glucose pentapalmitate, glucono-d -lactone mono-palmitate, a mixture of gluconic acid tri- and tetrapalmitate, and the ester derived from 1 mol. glucose and 2-3 mols. palmitic acid. Oils which may be so treated include cottonseed oil, hydrogenated or directedly re-arranged soyabean oil, corn oil, and palm and palm kernel oil. The oil and additive may either be heated together until all the fatty material present is liquid before being cooled, or, alternatively, the oil may first be completely liquified by heating and the additive then added. Specifications 574,807 and 604,136 is referred to.
