Abstract

A soap-free detergent in tablet form contains predominantly a mixture of more than five per cent glycerin or glycol partially esterified with a saturated fatty acid containing twelve or more carbon atoms, and less than ninety-five per cent of a solid water-soluble salt (e.g. the sodium salt) of a sulphuric reaction product of an aliphatic organic compound containing eight or more carbon atoms in the alkyl radical and characterized by its ability to dissolve in water quickly to an amount ample to accomplish its purpose as a detergent in cleansing operations, by its ability to resist precipitation when added to hard water in concentrations ordinarily employed in cleansing operations, and by detergent and lathering properties of sufficient magnitude that efficient cleansing is effected when it is employed in the ordinary way. Specified sulphuric reaction products are sulphonated and sulphated aliphatic hydrocarbons or alcohols (e.g. the normal primary monohydric alcohols obtainable from natural fats and fatty oils, such as coconut and palm kernel oils); fatty acid esters (e.g. the oleic ester) of hydroxyethylsulphonic acid; the fatty acid esters (e.g. the coconut oil fatty acid ester) or the alkyl ethers of dihydroxypropylsulphonic acid; and fatty acid amides (e.g. the oleic acid amide) of methyl taurine; or mixtures thereof. The quantity of partially esterified alcohol (e.g. monostearin) used is preferably about 8 to about 40 per cent. In examples, tablets are prepared from the following compositions: (1) 90 parts sodium salt of the reaction product of concentrated sulphuric acid on the normal primary monohydric alcohols derived from coconut oil and 10 parts mono- and/or di-glycerides prepared from hydrogenated cottonseed oil; (2) 70 parts ammonium salt of the oleic ester of hydroxyethylsulphonic acid and 30 parts monostearin; (3) 8 parts sodium salt of the oleic acid amide of methyl taurine and 20 parts mono- and/or di-stearin; (4) 75 parts of the sulphated product used in example 1 and 25 parts ethylene glycol mono-stearic ester. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the detergent comprises a mixture of one or more polyhydric alcohols partly esterified with a saturated fatty acid containing twelve or more carbon atoms and one or more water-soluble salts of sulphuric reaction products of high molecular weight organic compounds, the salts being physically characterized as in the opening paragraph, above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
