Abstract

Superfatted soap is made by a process which comprises: forming a solution of a soap having a water content between 15 and 35 wt. per cent of the soap solution, and a superfatting agent beneficial to the skin in a chemically inert solvent having a boiling-point above 20 DEG C. and below 130 DEG C.; and vaporizing the solution to remove solvent and water and leave solids comprising soap and superfatting agent intimately admixed and containing less than 5 wt. per cent of water. The soap may be a conventional one, e.g. the sodium soap of a mixture of coconut and tallow fatty acids, or a mixture of soap and synthetic detergents such as a mixture of the above-mentioned sodium soap, sodium hydrogenated coco fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate and sodium N-higher fatty acyl-N-methyl taurine. Suitable superfatting agents mentioned include hexadecane, octadecane, eicosane, white mineral oil and various light and heavy mineral oils, petrolatum, oleic acid, linoleic acid, oleyl alcohol, glycerine, polythylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, glycerides, lanolin, isopropyl myristate, isobutyl stearate, and dimethyl silicone. Suitable solvents are alcohols, ketones and ethers, typical of those specified being isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, diallyl ether, dimethyl glycol, and dioxane. Optional ingredients in the final compositions include starch-sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, cocodiethanolamide, dyes such as Calcozine Red, perfumes, stabilizers such as di-tertiarybutyl-p-cresol, preservatives such as stannous chloride, spot preventatives such as sodium beta-glucoheptonate. The products may be in the form of bars, grains, chips or flakes.
