Fats and fatty oils, purifying.-In the neutralization of fats and fatty oils by alkali the soap is removed by a volatile solvent in which the neutral oil is insoluble. The solvent may be added during or after the neutralization, and the oil may be in solution e.g. as obtained by extraction bv solvents. In an example, 100 1b. of palm oil dissolved in 200 lb. of benzene is agitated warm with the necessary sodium hydrate or carbonate dissolved in dilute methyl or ethyl alcohol, and allowed to stand. The layers are separated and distilled to recover the solvents. fatty acids being obtained if the soap solution is first treated with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.
