Abstract

A process for introducing a molecule of water into the carboxyl group of oils, fats or fatty acids, thus producing ortho carboxylic acids consists in treating the oils &c. in the cold with sulphuric acid until the product is soluble in water, when water is added and the product is separated. Oleic acid, or peanut, olive, copra, palm, or castor oil may be treated. The products, which are stated to be soluble in water, may be warmed with alkali, ammonia or sodium sulphite, carbonate or hypochlorite to form detergents.ALSO:A process for introducing a molecule of water into the carboxyl group of oils, fats and fatty acids consists in treating the oils &c. in the cold with sulphuric acid until the product is soluble in water, when water is added and the product separated. Fatty acids thus treated yield products of the type <FORM:0390148/III/1> , and are soluble in water Oleic acid, peanut, copra, olive, palm or castor oil or fatty acids from these oils may be treated. The products may be warmed with alkali, ammonia or sodium sulphite, hypochlorite or carbonate to form liquid detergents. These detergents may be used as solvents or solubilizing agents in water for paraffin, phenols, higher alcohols, cyclohexanol, essential oils, formic or acetic acid. Such mixtures may be used in degreasing textiles.
