Abstract
Sulphonated fatty oils, fats or fatty acids or salts thereof are freed from residual unsulphonated material by treatment, in the presence of water, with sulphonatable saponifiable oils or fats or fatty acids and separating the insoluble oily layer from the aqueous layer. Before treatment with the saponifiable oils &c., the sulphonated product may be washed with water or an aqueous solution of an alkali or of a neutral salt. In an example, a sulphonated castor oil, preferably after being washed, is treated with water and castor oil, and after being mixed is allowed to stand. The aqueous layer is washed with a salt solution, and the oil which separates on standing neutralized. The mixture of unsulphonated oil and added castor oil may be subjected to sulphonation and the process repeated. After separation of the purified aqueous solution of the sulphonated fatty oil &c., it may be concentrated by the addition of a salt solution or an acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use, for washing the aqueous sulphonated fatty oil &c., of any fixed oily substance, e.g. an animal, vegetable, or mineral oil, fat or fatty acid or wax. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
