Abstract

Esters of the acids of animal or vegetable fats or oils and polyhydric alcohols are produced by causing the free fatty acid and the alcohol to react on one another in the form of vapour or mist. The reaction may be carried out at atmospheric or reduced pressure, and known esterification catalysts such as zinc, tin or magnesium, or their oxides or salts may be present. The esterification components may be mixed with steam, or a mixture such as is obtained by the distillation of fatty acids or deacidification of oils with superheated steam may be used directly for esterification with glycerine. Examples are given of the esterification of the vapours of olive oil fatty acids by means of glycerine vapour under reduced pressure, water vapour or superheated steam being present.
