Abstract
An adhesive consists of starch paste containing a small quantity of soap which is added to the starch before or during its conversion into paste. The soap must be soluble in or emulsifiable with water, such as a soap of a resin acid or fatty acid such as stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, wood-oil acid, ricinoleic acid, erucic acid, brassic acid, fish oil acids, colophonic acids, cerotic acid, melissic acid, &c. The soaps obtained by saponification of oils, fats, waxes such as bees-wax and vegetable wax, spermaceti, or wool fat may be used, and also the anilides or their homologues. The soaps may contain the non-saponifiable constituents of the fats, oils, waxes, or wool fat. Soaps of potash, soda, ammonium, calcium, and other metals may be used. In an example 1 kilo of starch is mixed with 50 grams of ground soap and boiled with 5 litres of water. The soap may also be mixed with the starch and passed with water over roller driers. The flakes thus produced are ground and mixed with water to form an adhesive. Another method consists in saponifying fats, oils, waxes, &c. with an alcoholic solution of alkali in the presence of starch, or acids may be mixed with the starch and saponified with bases or carbonates. Specification 4719/08 is referred to.
