Abstract

Gelatinization and discoloration of liquid potash soaps is prevented by addition of potassium lactate, acetate, or both. The salt may be added dry or in solution or be formed by adding the acid to excess of alkali in the soap. Glycerine, glycol, disinfectants, perfumes, solvents, or other materials inert to the salts may also be added. In an example, 400 kg. of coco nut oil fatty acid, 100 kg. of tallow fatty acid, and 65 kg. of oleic acid are saponified by 400 kg. of 40 DEG B<\>ae. caustic potash and 1600 kg. of water; 157 kg. of a 50 per cent solution of potassium acetate or 155 kg. of a 50 per cent solution of potassium lactate are added. Specification 301,020, [Class 91 Oils &c.], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 7163/99 and 173,915, [both in Class 91, Oils, &c.].
