Abstract
A solution in cold water of a mixture of starch and alkali silicate is used as a detergent. For example, 100 lb. of silicate of soda and 40 lb. of potato starch are dissolved in 2800--3500 lb. of cold water, 25--40 lb. of soap powder, or 25 lb. of soap powder and 15 lb. of lauryl or other soap-like fatty alcohol may be added.ALSO:Unmodified starch, e.g. potato, maize, or tapioca starch, and a crystalline alkali silicate are mixed. The mixture dissolves in cold water, and may be used to form sizes, adhesives or detergents, if desired with the addition of soaps, wetting-agents, rosin, protein, lecithin, pigments, fillers, or modified starch.
