Abstract

Cellulose ethers are rendered dispersible in water by first mixing them with a soap-forming fatty acid which is immiscible with and nondispersible in water and then agitating the mixture with water. The agitation with water is effected at room temperature, but the preliminary admixture of a fatty acid may be carried out at a raised temperature, e.g. 70 DEG C. The water may contain ingredients useful in the preparation of liquid detergent compositions, e.g. potassium hydroxide, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium xylene sulphonate or sodium tallow fatty acid methyltauride. Specified ethers which may be treated are methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethylmethyl cellulose, sodium carboxymethyl-ethyl cellulose and sodium carboxymethyl-hydroxyethyl cellulose. Specified fatty acids are coconut oil fatty acids and oleic acid. Examples are given.
