Abstract

A saponaceous cleansing composition is made from a mixture of stearic acid, a sulphonated oil, sodium silicate, caustic potash and water in such proportions as will result in a fatty acid content within the range of 5.5 to 19 per cent. The sulphonated oil specified comprises sulphonated turkey red oil with a soda or ammonia finish. The compositions may also contain sodium sulphate or sodium carbonate, particularly when the product is made in bar form. Pine oil may also be added to the compositions. In use, the compositions may be employed with an alkali meta-silicate. Many examples are given with the proportions of the ingredients so as to result in fatty acid contents within the specified range. In making the compositions, the sulphonated oil, sodium silicate solution, liquid caustic potash and water are heated to about 160 DEG F. in a jacketed boiling pan and then the melted stearic acid is added thereto and mixed by trituration until a temperature of 171 DEG F. is reached at which point complete saponification takes place. The compositions may be used for cleaning fabrics, wool scouring, and for general domestic and industrial purposes.
