Abstract

259,437. Ullmann, G. Jan. 11, 1926. Soaps, materials and compositions for making. -The substances which cause hardness, and other salts present in the water used in soaping operations, such as the cleansing and washing out of textiles, toilet and domestic washing operations, and soaping operations in which sea water is used, are rendered harmless by the use of a mixture of ordinary soap with a soap formed by saponifying sulphonated fats, oils, resins, or fatty or resinous acids, the amount of the latter soap employed being less in quantity than that chemically equivalent to the substances which cause hardness &c., and so small that any separation of soaps of lime &c. takes place in an innocuous form. In examples :-(1) Goods are soaped in water of 12‹ of hardness (German), to which has been added per litre 3 grm. of a usual soap and 0.6 grm. of a soap derived from a sulphonated oil and containing about 62 per cent of fatty acids and 4.3 per cent of sulphur trioxide; or 0.45 grm. only of the latter soap mav be used and a stabilizing or peptizing agent added, e.g. 0.1 grm. of urea, 0.08 grm. of neutral sodium lactate, 10 ccs. of a solution of amino acids obtained by breaking down glutine in a 1 per cent solution of normal lye for an hour at three atmospheres pressure, 0.06 grm. of disodium phosphate, or an equivalent quantity of borax or waterglass. (2) 60 kg. tallow and 40 kg. bone grease are saponified in the usual way, salted out and boiled up, the hot mass being crutched with from 4-6 kg. of the soap derived from a sulphonated oil specified in example (1). Stabilizing or peptizing agents may be added to the finished soap or to the water with which it is to be used. It is stated that bv adding a soap derived from a sulphonated oil to a, shaving- soap, the potash content of the latter may be reduced and the excess of fat usually used be omitted; that its addition to a glycerin soap removes its stickiness; that its addition to a cold-process cocoanut oil soap mitigates the irritant action due to the presence of free alkali, and that its addition to a milled toilet soap obviates the need of adding lanoline.
