Abstract
A horticultural insecticide, in jelly form for dilution with water for use, is prepared by saponifying a mixture of a fatty substance and a vegetable oil with alkali, neutralizing the product or rendering it slightly acid, and finally incorporating therewith a mineral oil extract of pyrethrum. According to an example a mixture of lard and cocoanut oil is melted and mixed with a warm aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide. Glacial acetic acid is added until the mixture is slightly acid and the whole poured into a cotton-lined perforated receptacle to allow liquid to drain away. The solid residue is boiled with a paraffin extract of pyrethrum powder to which a little alcohol has been added, and the whole mixture is cooled to form a jelly, any supernatant liquid being removed. Gasoline, benzine, naphtha or kerosene may be used in place of paraffin oil for preparing the pyrethrum extract.
