Abstract
A neutral or substantially neutral antiseptic, germicide, disinfectant and deodorant is made by emulsifying one or more essential oils possessing germicidal properties, such as oils of the eucalyptus or ti tree, with a solution obtained by adding water to a saponified alcoholic solution of fat, fatty acid or both, and adding a mercury or silver salt and a soluble iodide, for example mercuric and potassium iodides, to form a complex soluble salt, for example an iodomercuriate. The saponified fat or fatty acid solution may be made by dissolving butter fat or oleic acid or both in alcohol, and heating in a closed vessel with sodium or potassium hydroxide or a mixture thereof. The composition gives a white emulsion on mixing with water, and a clear or slightly opalescent liquid when added in a quantity of from 2-10 per cent by volume to a physiological salt solution made with distilled water.
