Description

Patented Dec. 8, 1931 UNITED STATES PAUL E. TODD, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN soar No Drawing. Original application filed May 25, 1927, Serial No. 194,234. Divided and filed August 2, 1929. Serial No. 383,165.
This invention relates to germicidalsoap. I This application is a division of my application for Letters Patent filed May 25, 1927, Serial .N o. 194,234.
The object of this invention is to provide an improvement in germicidal soaps, particularly in mercuric germicidal soaps. It 1s a particular object to increase the germicidal quality and modify the harshness of such soa Pleretofore, V, an effective germicidal soap has been prepared by incorporating about two percent of a mercuric salt, for example mercuric chloride, in a good ordinary toilet soap base. Such a soap, though strongly germicidal, is harsh in its efiect. upon the skin owing to the corrosive action of the combined mercury.
I have found that by using such a mercuric salt in conjunction with cresol'in soap, it is possible to obtain a soap with a high degree of efliciency as a germicide, but with a con siderably milder action upon the skin, this latter quality being evidently due to the greater effectiveness of mercuric salts when used in conjunction with cresol, making it possible to use a considerably smaller percentage of the mercuric salt and still obtain a soap with a high germicidal efliciency.
There is what might be called a synergetic relation between the germicidal actions of soluble mercuric salts and cresol.
I have found, for example, that a good ordinary soap base made from cocoanut and this application tilled water, stirring the alkali into the oils and crutching until saponification was Well under way. I then heat the mixture until the saponification is complete. I then crutch 10.3 parts of mercurie'chloride dissolved in 30 parts of boiling Water, into the soap, together with 103 parts of cresol, U. S. P. After thorough crutching, the hot soap is poured into a small soap frame, where it is cooled and cut up ready for use.
The improved soap can be prepared by taking a good quality of toilet soap like the well known Ivory and milling or crutching my special ingredients into it.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim .as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A soap composition containing cresol 1% to 15% and mercuric chloride 4% to 3%.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.

In preparing my soap, I have as an example taken by weight 500 parts of Cochin cocoanut oil-and 100 parts of olive oil and saponified the mixed oils with 107 parts of caustic soda dissolved in 214 parts of dis-
