Abstract
A lubricating composition, suitable for the lubrication of air turbines used to drive dentists' drills, comprises one or more glyceryl triesters of C6-C8 paraffin monocarboxylic acids and a minor proportion of castor oil. Acids mentioned are caproic, oenanthic and caprylic acids. Glyceryl tricoprylate may be used in conjunction with glyceryl triesters of other paraffin monocarboxylic acids, but glyceryl triesters of acids containing more than 8 carbon atoms should not be present to the extent of more than about 8% of the weight of the tricaprylate. In an example, a lubricating composition is described consisting of glyceryl tricaprylate (prepared from a commercial caprylic acid containing small amounts of caproic and capric acids) and castor oil.ALSO:Glyceryl tri-caprylate may be prepared by esterifying commercial caprylic acid (which contains small proportions of caproic and capric acids) with glycerol under reflux and in the presence of xylene as entraining solvent. After reaction for 18 hours, the solvent is distilled off and the residual acidity of the ester is neutralized with caustic soda solution. The ester is then washed free of soap, dried and bleached with a mixture of active earth and activated carbon. The bleaching agent is removed by filtration and the ester then deodorized by treatment with live steam.
