Abstract

An aqueous bleaching bath primarily for the treatment of cellulose fibres, e.g. cotton, contains 1-30 grams per litre of an alkali metal chlorite, 1-30 grams per litre of at least one ester of an organic acid, which ester melts below 60 DEG C., is insoluble in the bath and is in emulsified form, and sufficient emulsifier to form a stable emulsion. The esters used are preferably those formed by esterifying monobasic or polybasic aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic acids containing up to 10 carbon atoms, which may be substituted by hydroxyl groups or halogen atoms, with aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic mono- or poly-alcohols, and preferably have boiling points above 100 DEG C. Specified esters are butane-diol-1, 4-diacetate, dibutyl tartrate, diethyl phthalate, dipropyl oxalate, butyl propionate and benzyl acetate. Suitable emulsifiers, which may be present in concentrations of 1-30 grams per litre, are octadecyl alcohol polyglycol ethers with 6-12 mols of ethylene oxide, oleic acid diethanolamide, triethanolamine monostearic acid ester, alkyl sulphonates and fatty alcohol sulphates, e.g. lauryl sulphate and octadecyl sulphate. The bath may be prepared by converting the ester, with the emulsifier and a little water, into a concentrated emulsion, the desired amount of which is added to the bath containing the alkali metal chlorite and any other additives, e.g. anticorrosion agents, such as fluorides and nitrates, and aldehydes, or the ester and emulsifier may be stirred into the bath before emulsification. Specification 764,649 is referred to.
