1357036 Lubricating polyester filaments FARBWERKE HOECHST AG 17 Nov 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 53391/71 Heading B5B A process for lubricating polyester filaments and fibres comprises applying to the freshly spun polyester before drawing an aqueous emulsion or solution of a compound of general formula in which R 1 -CO- and R 2 -CO- are radicals of straight- or branched-chain alkane- or alkenemonocarboxylic acids having 12 to 22 carbon atoms and (n + m) is an integer from 8 to 24, in a concentration and under conditions so that the compound (I) is applied to the filaments in an amount of at least 0À05% by weight. Preferably the aqueous emulsion or solution contains 2 to 18 g./l. of the compound (I). The compound (I) may be prepared by esterifying an addition product of 8 to 24 moles of ethylene oxide and 1 mole of 1,4-butanediol with a suitable monocarboxylic acid. In examples freshly melt-spun polyethylene terephthalate filaments are lubricated by means of a dip roller with an aqueous solution of a compound of Formula (I) prepared from reaction of stearic acid and 1,4-butanedioldecaglycol ether (Ex. 1), lauric acid and the addition product of 15 moles of ethylene oxide and 1,4-butanediol (Ex. 2) or oleic acid and the addition product of 20 moles ethylene oxide and 1 mole of 1,4-butanediol (Ex. 2). The filaments are then hot drawn at 170‹ C. or 190‹C., crimped and cut into staple. The treating agent removes, or mitigates the effects of, incompletely polymerized reaction products in the melt-spun polyesters.
