Abstract

Textile materials are treated with a composition comprising (1) a poly-alkylene oxide wax having a molecular weight of over 2,000, or a wax-like reaction product of an alkylene oxide with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic-aromatic or cycloaliphatic-aromatic hydroxy, carboxy, mercapto, amino, carbonamide or sulphonamide compound, or an ether or ester produced from a polyalkylene oxide wax and a hydroxy compound or carboxylic acid, and (2) a neutralized sulphonated higher fatty acid or fatty acid ester. The materials treated may be fibres, fabrics or garments of cellulose acetate, cellulose ethers, polyesters, polyamides, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic acid esters, acrylonitrile, silk or wool. The waxy component may be a polymer of ethylene oxide or a condensation product of ethylene oxide and butyl alcohol, octylalcohol, dodecylalcohol, octylmercaptan, dodecylamine, cyclohexyl alcohol, cyclohexylamine, naphthene alcohols, benzyl alcohol, tetrahydronaphthols, a first distillate fraction fatty acid mixture of chain length C7 to C9 from coconut oil fatty acids, naphthenic acids, oleic acid, lauric acid amide or alkylbenzene - sulphonic acid amides. The sulphonated fatty acid component may be turkey red oil, sulphonated ricinoleic acid ester, sulphonated olein or castor oil fatty acid neutralized with an organic or an inorganic base. The composition may be applied in concentrated oily form, as a paste, or in organic or aqueous solution and may be incorporated in a laundering bath. A mineral, animal or vegetable oil, fat or wax may be added and the composition may be used as a lubricant prior to spinning or in weaving or knitting processes. In examples, (3) acetate rayon fabric is treated at 30 DEG C. in a bath containing turkey red oil and polyethylene oxide wax; (4) polyamide or cellulose acetate fabric is treated in an aqueous bath comprising polyethylene oxide wax, turkey red oil, spindle oil and oleic acid partly neutralized with ammonia; (5) the polyethylene oxide wax of example (3) is replaced by polyethylene oxide wax stearic acid ester; (6) polyamide garments are washed in a bath comprising sodium alkylsulphate, the alkyl residues being C12-C18, and are rinsed in a bath comprising polyethylene oxide wax and turkey red oil.ALSO:A composition for treating textiles, in order to prevent the production of electrical charges thereon, comprises (1) a neutralized sulphonated higher fatty acid or fatty acid ester and (2) a polyalkylene oxide wax having a molecular weight of over 2,000. The alkylene oxide wax may be an alkylene oxide polymer or a waxlike reaction product of an alkylene oxide with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, adiphatic-aromatic or cyclo-aliphaticaromatic hydroxy, carboxy, mercapto, amino, carbonamide or sulphonamide compound or an ether or ester produced from a polyalkylene oxide wax and a hydroxy compound or carboxylic acid, such as an ethylene oxide polymer or a condensation product of ethylene oxide and butyl alcohol, octyl alcohol, dodecyl alcohol octyl mercaptan, dodecylamine, cyclohexyl alcohol, cyclohexylamine, naphthene alcohols, benzyl alcohol, tetrahydronaphthols, a first distillate fraction fatty acid mixture of chain length C7 to C9 from coconut oil fatty acids, naphthenic acids, oleic acid, lauric acid amide or alkylbenzene-sulphonic acid amides. The composition may also comprise a vegetable, animal or mineral oil, fat or wax and may be used as a lubricant prior to spinning, weaving or knitting in concentrated oily form, as a paste or in aqueous or organic solution. Ingredients (1) and (2) act as emulsifiers for oils, fats or waxes present in the composition. In an example fabrics of polyamide and cellulose acetate are treated in an aqueous bath comprising a polyethylene oxide, M.W.6000, Turkey red oil, spindle oil and oleic acid partly neutralized with ammonia.
