Abstract
The fatty amide reaction product of (a) diethanolamine, ethyl monoethanolamine, diisopropanolamine or 2-amino-2-methyl propanol-1 and (b) a fatty acylating substance having at least eight carbon atoms in the acyl group, in the proportion of at least 1.5 moles. of (a) to each mole. of (b), is mixed with a non-resinifying oil to give a water-emulsifiable composition for the treatment of woollen textile materials. The composition acts as a lubricant for the textile materials and may subsequently be removed in a scouring operation. Fatty acylating substances mentioned are coconut oil fatty acids, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, decylenic, dodecylenic, palmitoleic, oleic, ricinoleic and similar fatty acids, their acyl halides, alkyl esters and glycerides. The non-resinifying oil may be a mineral oil or a raw, blown or hydrogenated oil of the non-drying or semi-drying type derived from vegetable, animal or marine sources but excluding all drying oils. Mixtures of oils may be employed and specific oils mentioned include olive, rapeseed, rice bran, teaseed, soybean, peanut, corn, neat's-foot, sperm, cottonseed, castor, lard, white mineral and yellow paraffin oils. Blown vegetable oils diluted with mineral oil are preferred. Partially saponified oils such as partially saponified peanut oil may also be employed. Preferably, an ester of an aliphatic acid or an aliphatic alcohol is also incorporated in the composition, suitable esters including the methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl or amyl esters of stearic, oleic, palmitic, lauric, caprylic, capric, ricinoleic or naphthenic acids as well as octyl formate, decyl acetate, lauryl acetate, myristyl propionate, palmityl acetate, oleyl butyrate, stearyl acetate, naphthenyl propionate or ricinoleyl formate. Esters of polyhydric alcohols such as diethylene glycol monolaurate may also be used. Minor quantities of red-oil, caustic soda or mutual solvents such as ethylene glycol may be added to improve the emulsifying properties of the composition. When the composition is heated to 60-80 DEG C. for 2-3 hours it becomes capable of forming a true translucent or transparent emulsion in water. The composition may be used in the form of an aqueous emulsion or in solution in hydrocarbon or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents by spraying the emulsion or solution or by immersing the textile materials therein, or the textile materials may be coated directly with the composition by means of rollers, wicks or the like. Textile materials which may be treated are those containing wool fibres such as are obtained in the shearing of sheep, angora goats or other wool-producing animals. Textile materials containing wool fibres mixed with other natural or synthetic staple fibres may also be treated. In the examples the reaction product of diethanolamine with coconut oil fatty acids is incorporated with: (1) methyl oleate and one of blown peanut oil, rice bran oil, partially saponified blown peanut oil, a mixture of blown soybean oil and pale yellow paraffin oil, a mixture of blown soybean oil and white mineral oil, or a mixture of pale yellow paraffin oil and diethylene glycol; (2) blown soybean oil alone or together with one of pale yellow paraffin oil, a mixture of pale yellow paraffin oil and diethylene glycol monolaurate, or a mixture of white mineral oil and isobutyl oleate; or (3) olive oil. The partially saponified blown peanut oil mentioned under (1) is prepared by mixing blown peanut oil, aqueous potassium hydroxide, 2,5-di-tert.-butyl hydroquinone and diethylene glycol. In further examples: (i) the reaction product of diethanolamine and oleic acid or di-isopropanolamine and coconut oil fatty acids is incorporated with isobutyl oleate, blown soybean oil and pale yellow paraffin oil; and (ii) the reaction product of 2-amino-2-methyl propanol-1 or N-ethyl monoethanolamine and coconut oil fatty acids is incorporated with methyl oleate and blown peanut oil. Specification 337,737, [Class 91], is referred to.ALSO:The fatty amide reaction product of (a) diethanolamine, ethyl monoethanolamine, diisopropanolamine or 2-amino-2-methyl propanol-1 and (b) a fatty acylating substance having at least eight carbon atoms in the acyl group, in the proportion of at least 1.5 moles. of (a) to each mole. of (b), is used as an ingredient of a composition for treating woollen textile materials. Fatty acylating substances mentioned are coconut oil fatty acids, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, decylenic, dodecylenic, palmitoleic, oleic, ricinoleic and similar fatty acids, their acyl halides, alkyl esters and glycerides. In the examples: (1) coconut oil fatty acids are reacted with diethanolamine, N-ethyl monoethanolamine, di-isopropanolamine or 2-amino-2-methyl propanol-1 and (2) oleic acid is reacted with diethanolamine. Specification 337,737, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.ALSO:The fatty amide reaction product of (a) diethanolamine, ethyl monoethanolamine, diisopropanolamine or 2-amino-2-methyl propanol-1 and (b) a fatty acylating substance having at least eight carbon atoms in the acyl group, in the proportion of at least 1.5 moles of (a) to each mole of (b), is mixed with a non-resinifying oil to give a water-emulsifiable composition for the treatment of woollen textile materials. The composition has static-eliminating and lubricating properties and the treated textile materials may be fulled and scoured without the addition of detergents. Wool fibres may be treated with the composition, combed, spun into yarn and the yarn woven into cloth which may then be fulled, scoured and rinsed. Woollen cloth manufactured by this method is stronger and has a distinctly softer handle. The residual oil remaining in the cloth after the treatment serves as a dyeing assistant. Fatty acylating substances mentioned are coconut oil fatty acids, caprylic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, decylenic, dodecylenic, palmitoleic, oleic, ricinoleic and similar fatty acids, their acyl halides, alkyl esters and glycerides. The non-resinifying oil may be a mineral oil or a raw, blown or hydrogenated oil of the non-drying or semi-drying type derived from vegetable, animal or marine sources, but excluding all drying oils. Mixtures of oils may be employed and specific oils mentioned include olive, rapeseed, rice bran, teaseed, soybean, peanut, corn, neat's-foot, sperm, cottonseed, castor, lard, white mineral and yellow paraffin oils. Textile materials which may be treated are those containing wool fibres such as are obtained in the shearing of sheep, angora goats or other wool-producing animals. Textile materials containing wool fibres mixed with other natural or synthetic staple fibres may also be treated. In the examples compositions mentioned contain the reaction product of diethanolamine with coconut oil fatty acids and also: (1) methyl oleate and one of blown peanut oil, rice bran oil, partially saponified blown peanut oil, a mixture of blown soybean oil and pale yellow paraffin oil, a mixture of blown soybean oil and white mineral oil, or a mixture of pale yellow paraffin oil and diethylene glycol; (2) blown soybean oil alone or together with one of pale yellow paraffin oil, a mixture of pale yellow paraffin oil and diethylene glycol monolaurate, or a mixture of white mineral oil and isobutyl oleate, or (3) olive oil. Specification 337,737, [Class 15 (ii)], is referred to.
