Abstract
Polyester fibres are treated with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide containing a glycol or a polyglycol or an ester or ether thereof. The handle and the dyeing properties of the fibres are thus improved. Preferably, a polyglycol of average molecular weight 4000-5000 is used and the concentration of alkali metal hydroxide is less than 4 per cent. Suitable polyglycol derivatives are obtainable by condensing carboxylic acids, e.g. acetic, lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic or ricinoleic acid, or fatty alcohols, e.g. lauryl, palmityl, stearyl or oleyl alcohol, with ethylene oxide of glycol. An example is given of the treatment of a polyethylene glycol terephthalate fabric. Specification 652,948 is referred to.
