Abstract

Mono- and difatty acid polyglycol esters are prepared by reaction of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids with ethylene oxide. The reaction is carried out at 140 to 200 DEG C in the presence of alkaline catalysts. After addition of 0.25 to 1.5 mol of ethylene oxide per mol of fatty acid, water and/or glycol and oligoglycols present in the reaction mixture are removed. Only then is the ethylene oxide addition continued up to the desired degree of ethoxylation. The esters obtained can be employed as oil emulsifiers or textile auxiliaries.
