Abstract

A monoester of propylene glycol and a higher fatty acid is prepared by esterifying in an inert atmosphere propylene glycol with the "higher fatty acid" in the presence of camphorsulphonic acid as catalyst. The term "higher fatty acid" is defined to be a saturated or unsaturated, straight chain or branched mono- or polycarboxylic acid having at least 8 carbon atoms in its molecule. The fatty acids are preferably those derived from naturally occurring fats and oils. Preferred reaction conditions are 140 DEG to 200 DEG C., a mole ratio of glycol to fatty acid of 1:1 to 5:1, a catalyst concentration of 0.1 to 5% by weight of the glycol and fatty acid, and continuous removal of water from the reaction mixture. In a preferred continuous process the product mixture is withdrawn from the reaction zone, propylene glycol separated therefrom, the monoester separated from the glycol-stripped mixture, whereby a residue of catalyst is obtained, at least the catalyst residue returned to the reaction zone, and propylene glycol and fatty acid introduced into said reaction zone. Specified camphorsulphonic acids are d-10-, dl-10-, 3-, and 8-camphorsulphonic acids.
