Abstract
Saturated complex esters derived from aliphatic glycols or polyglycols, dibasic aliphatic acids and monobasic aliphatic acids or monohydric aliphatic alcohols are washed with aqueous alkali in the presence of methylol. The complex esters may be represented by the general formula A(OOC-B-COOG)nOOC-B-COOA or A(COOG-OOCB)n-COOG-COOA in which B and G represent dibasic aliphatic acid and glycol residues respectively, n is an integer preferably less than 4 and A is a monofunctional aliphatic group. The preferred esters are those of formula AOOC-B-COO-G-OOC-B-COOA in which A is a monohydric alcohol residue, B is a dibasic aliphatic acid residue and G a glycol or polyglycol residue. Preferred starting materials from which the esters are derived are C8 and C9 alcohols, preferably branched-chain, sebacic and adipic acids, and polyethylene glycols up to and including hexa-ethylene glycol. The preparation of the esters may be carried out by esterification in one or more stages, e.g. by the simultaneous reaction of stoichiometric proportions of the reactants, or by the preparation of the glycol half ester or the alcohol half ester and subsequent reaction with the alcohol or glycol respectively. Conventional esterification catalysts, such as toluene sulphonic acid or sodium bisulphate may be used. Preferably the washing with aqueous alkali in the presence of methylol is followed by washing with water in one or more stages, at least one of these stages and preferably all of them being carried out in the presence of methylol. The preferred range of proportion of methylol is 3/4 to 2 volume to one volume of ester. Commercial methylol, containing about 5 per cent of methanol, may be used. The washing is conveniently carried out between 10 DEG and 30 DEG C. The preferred alkali is sodium carbonate and concentrations of 7.5 to 10 per cent (w./v.) are satisfactory. Preferably before the alkali washing the esters are stripped of volatile products by heating under vacuum. In the example a complex ester prepared from sebacic acid, commercial "polyglycol 200" and 2-ethyl hexanol is heated under vacuum to remove volatile contaminants, heated with aqueous sodium carbonate in the presence of methylol and finally washed with water in two stages.
