Abstract
Esters of carboxylic acids with low molecular weight alcohols (i.e. containing not more than three carbon atoms) are obtained by dissolving a polyester in a mono- or poly-hydric alcohol which preferably boils at above 100 DEG C., reacting the solution thus obtained with a low molecular weight alcohol, preferably methanol or ethanol, in an acid or alkaline medium, to effect ester interchange and separating the desired ester from the mixture. The polyester is heated with the mono- or poly-hydric alcohol, preferably the polyhydric alcohol or alcohols used in the polyester, until a clear solution is obtained. To the clear solution is added the low molecular weight alcohol and the mixture is rendered acid or alkaline. An alkaline medium is preferred for the ester interchange and is obtained by the addition of, for example, sodium or potassium hydroxide or alcoholates. The reaction is an equilibrium reaction and the formation of the desired ester occurs the better the less soluble the ester is in the reaction mixture. An excess of low molecular weight alcohol may be used to increase the yield of a soluble ester. The ester is obtained from the reaction mixture by filtration or by fractional distillation or crystallization. In examples: (1) polyethylene terephthalate scrap is dissolved in ethylene glycol or octyl alcohol and the solution reacted with methanol in the presence of sodium methylate, dimethyl terephthalate precipitates and is removed by filtration; (2) as in (1) using ethylene glycol, ethanol and sodium ethylate, diethyl terephthalate being obtained; (3) the polymerized ethylene glycol ester of 4 : 41-diphenylmethane dicarboxylic acid is dissolved in ethylene glycol and reacted with methanol and sodium ethylate, the dimethyl ester of 4 : 41-diphenylmethane dicarboxylic acid being obtained by filtration; (4) as in (1) using polymerized isophthalic acid glycol ester, ethylene glycol, methanol and sodium ethylate, dimethyl isophthalate being obtained by filtration after cooling.
