Abstract

Textiles are made water-repellent by treatment with a mixed polymerizate obtained by common polymerization of maleic anhydride with either a vinyl fatty acid ester or a vinyl ether containing at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule. The polymerizates can be made by the process described in Specification 376,479. The free acids obtainable by opening the anhydride by hydrolysis or functional derivatives of the acid other than the anhydride may also be used, e.g. esters and amides. Esters may be obtained by using appropriate mono and di-esters of maleic acid instead of maleic anhydride for the polymerization. In examples: (1) cotton fabric is impregnated with a methylene chloride solution of the mixed polymerizate from vinyl stearate and maleic anhydride, dried and heated to about 100 DEG C.; (2) cotton or artificial silk is similarly treated with the mixed polymerizate from vinyl palmitate and maleic acid and may be further treated with aluminium formate; (3) loose wool is treated with the mixed polymerizate from vinyl stearate and maleic anhydride; (4) cotton or artificial silk is treated with the mixed polymerizate from vinyl octodecyl ether and maleic anhydride, or from maleic anhydride and the vinyl ether of the alcohol mixture obtained by reduction of coconut oil fatty acids; (5) cotton fabric is treated with the mixed polymerizate of maleic anhydride and vinyldodecyl ether; (6) viscose artificial silk is treated with the mixed polymerizate of maleic anhydride and the vinyl ether of montan wax alcohol; (7) cotton or viscose artificial silk is treated with the mixed polymerizate from vinyl stearate and the semi-ester of maleic acid with octodecyl alcohol; (8) cotton or artificial silk is treated with the mixed polymerizate from vinyloctodecyl ether and maleic acid dimethyl ester; and (9) loose wool is impregnated with the free acid of the mixed polymerizate from vinyloctodecyl ether and maleic anhydride.
