Abstract

Fibrous materials e.g., wool, cotton, viscose rayon, nylon and artificial protein fibres, are dyed in an aqueous bath in the presence of an organic ester which has a sufficiently high and steady rate of hydrolysis and is present in a sufficient proportion and under such conditions of temperature and initial pH value as to ensure that hydrolysis of the ester takes place and that the acid formed by the hydrolysis is at least sufficient to prevent any increase of more than 0.2 of a unit of pH in the initial pH value of the dyebath during the dyeing. Specified organic esters are diethyltartrate, -succinate, -fumarate, -malonate and -oxalate, ethyl lactate, triethyl citrate, phenyl acetate, monoacetin, triacetin and dibutyl oxalate. Examples describe the dyeing of wool with acid and metachrome dyes and also the dyeing of nylon and cotton.
