Abstract

The colouration of textile materials made of or containing an organic derivative of cellulose is effected by mechanically impregnating with a solution of a dye in a mixture of an aliphatic monohydric alcohol and water containing an inorganic thiocyanate which is a swelling agent for the cellulose derivative. Advantageously the alcohol constitutes at least 60 per cent of the dye liquor. In addition the dye-bath may contain an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid such as acetic, propionic or butyric acid, containing up to four carbon atoms and/or a penetrating agent such as sulphonated castor-oil, triethanolamine or a sodium salt of a sulphated long-chain fatty alcohol, e.g. lauryl alcohol. The dyes may be such as can be applied directly, e.g. acid wool dyes or water-insoluble dyes applied in aqueous dispersion, or may be vat dyes applied as the leuco compounds or as salts of acid sulphuric acid esters thereof. Specified lower aliphatic alcohols are methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropryl, n-butyl, sec.-butyl, tert.-butyl, n-amyl, sec.-amyl and tert.-amyl alcohols. Specified inorganic swelling agents are sodium, potassium and ammonium thiocyanates. In examples: (1) a cellulose acetate fabric is padded with an aqueous liquor containing 1-methylamino-4-isopropyl-amino-anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid amide. 2 - chloro - 4 - nitro - 6 - bromo - 31 - chloro - 41 (di - b - hydroxyethyl)amino - azobenzene, 1 : 4-hydroxyamineanthraquinone, ethyl alcohol, sodium thiocyanate and acetic acid and washed; (2) a cellulose acetate fabric is padded with an aqueous liquor containing Azo rubinol 3GP, ethyl alcohol, sodium thiocyanate and acetic acid and washed; (3) a scoured cellulose acetate fabric is padded with an aqueous liquor containing xylene milling blue GL, 2 - chloro - 4 - nitro - 6 - bromo - 31 - chloro - 41 - (di - b - hydroxyethyl)amino - azobenzene, 1 : 4-hydroxyaminoanthraquinone, ethyl alcohol, sodium thiocyanate and acetic acid and washed; (4) a cellulose acetate-regenerated cellulose mixed fabric is padded with an aqueous liquor containing Ponsol blue BF, ethyl alcohol and sodium thiocyanate, passed through an aqueous solution containing sodium nitrite and sulphuric acid, washed, neutralised, scoured and dried to obtain an even blue dyeing; (5) a cellulose acetate fabric is padded with an aqueous liquor at 30 DEG C. containing 2 - chloro - 4 - nitro - 6 - bromo - 31 - chloro - 41 - (di - b - hydroxyethyl)amino - azobenzene, 1 - methylamino - 4 - isobutylaminoanthraquinone - 2 - carboxylic acid amide, 2 - chloro - 4 - nitro - 41 - methyl - diphenylamine, ethyl alcohol, sodium thiocyanate and turkey red oil, sque zed and washed. 1 - methylamino - 4 - iso - propylamino - 2 - carboxyamide - anthraquinone is obtained by condensing iso-propylamine with the corresponding 4 - bromo - anthraquinone. 1 - methylamino - 4 - isobutylamino - 2 - carboxyamide-anthraquinone is obtained by condensing iso-butylamine with the corresponding 4-bromo-anthraquinone.
