Textile materials of organic derivatives of cellulose are coloured by first impregnating them with a solution of a dye in an aqueous monohydric aliphatic alcohol of from 1 to 5 carbon atoms and then with an aqueous solution of an inorganic swelling agent for the organic derivative of cellulose, particularly a thiocyanate. The aqueous alcohol is preferably of at least 60 per cent strength and the thiocyanate of from 10 to 25 per cent strength. Suitable dyestuffs are the vat dyestuffs, which may be used in the leuco form or as sulphuric acid esters of the leuco dyestuffs, the dispersed insoluble dyestuffs, and particularly the acid wool dyestuffs. In an example, a cellulose acetate fabric is padded with a solution of Alizarin Cyanine Green G.H.N. dissolved in 70 per cent aqueous ethyl alcohol at 30 DEG C. and then passed into a 20 per cent aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate at 30 DEG C.
