Abstract

The sticking temperature and safe ironing temperature of cellulose triacetate fibres are raised by subjecting the fibres to the action of carboxylic esters, ethers or ether-carboxylic esters of polyhydric alcohols. The esters, ethers or ether-esters are preferably those of polyhydric alcohols containing up to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol and glycerol. Carboxylic esters are preferably lower fatty acid (C1-C4) esters, and ethers are preferably C1-C4 alkyl ethers. The esters, ethers or ether-esters, which may contain at the most one free hydroxyl group, are preferably miscible with water to the extent of at least 5 parts to 95 parts of water by weight and may have boiling points of at least 190 DEG C. The fibres may be impregnated with the polyhydric alcohol derivative by padding either directly or in an aqueous liquid. If the polyhydric alcohol derivative is not miscible with water in the proportion employed a water-miscible liquid, e.g. methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or isopropyl alcohol, glycol, glycerol or diethylene glycol, may be added in order to render the aqueous liquid homogeneous, and in order that the liquid may remain uniformly disposed on the padded fibres during subsequent manipulation a small proportion of a thickener, e.g. 1-3% of water-soluble methyl cellulose, may be added, The impregnated fibres may subsequently be subjected to a heat treatment such as steaming or immersion in a hot inert liquid, e.g. hot mercury or a low melting alloy such as Wood's metal. The fibres may also be treated with the polyhydric alcohol derivatives by passage through the treatment liquids or passing the treatment liquids through the fibres. The treatment facilitates the subsequent dyeing of the fibres, e.g. with disperse dyes, provided that the material carries the polyhydric alcohol derivative or has not been dried after washing with water until free of the polyhydric alcohol derivative when it enters the dye bath.
