Abstract
Textile materials of a cellulose ester of an organic acid or of a cellulose ether are coloured by mechanically impregnating them with a solution of a dye in a mixture of water, aliphatic monohydride alcohol containing up to five carbon atoms, and an inorganic thiocyanate which is a swelling agent for the cellulose ester or ether, and thereafter steaming the materials. The impregnated materials may be dried before steaming. The alcohol may constitute from 55 to 75 per cent of the water and alcohol together, and the thiocyanate may be present in amounts from 1 to 3 per cent based on the weight of the dyebath. The process is of particular merit when using acid dyes, but water-insoluble dyes such as the azo, anthraquinone and nitro-di-arylamine dyes may be used. In an example, cellulose acetate satin fabric is padded with a dye liquor containing Artol Blue B, Chrysophenine and Cellit Fast Red BB in a mixture containing methylated spirit, water and ammonium thiocyanate in proportion 75 c.c. methylated spirit, 25 c.c. water and 5 gms. ammonium thiocyanate, and the fabric is then dried, steamed at 107 DEG C. for 15 mins., washed and finished in the usual manner. The Provisional Specification refers to Specification 576,927.
