Abstract
Cellulose acetate textile materials are coloured by impregnation with a solution of a direct dyeing dye in a liquid comprising water, at least 60 per cent, e.g. 65 per cent, by weight of ethyl alcohol and from 1 to 8 per cent, e.g. 4-5 per cent, by weight of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing at the most 4 carbon atoms. The dyes employed may be acid dyes of the kind ordinarily employed for dyeing wool, or dyes difficultly soluble in water of the kind which colour cellulose acetate directly when applied in the form of aqueous dispersions. The process is applicable to the dyeing of cellulose acetate in the form of fabrics, staple fibre (e.g. in the form of a top or roving) or yarns, and to the production of differential dyeings or crossed-dyed effects on mixed materials containing fibres of cellulose acetate and of other materials, e.g. cotton, silk, wool or regenerated cellulose. Thus the cellulose acetate fibres in a mixed fabric of cellulose acetate and wool may be dyed with water-insoluble dyes having no affinity for the wool fibres, which may be left uncoloured or subsequently coloured with dyes having affinity for wool. In examples: (1) a cellulose acetate fabric is pad-dyed with a mixture of 6-chloro-2 : 4 - dinitro - 21 - acetylamino - 51 - methoxy - 41 - di - (b - hydroxyethyl) - aminoazobenzene and 4-nitro-21-acetylamino-41-di-(b -hydroxyethyl) -aminoazobenzene in an aqueous bath containing ethyl alcohol and acetic acid; (2) Pentacyl Brilliant Blue E is similarly applied. Other acids specified are propionic and butyric acids. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of cellulose esters other than the acetate, e.g. cellulose propionate, butyrate, acetate-propionate and acetate-butyrate, and of cellulose ethers, e.g. ethyl and benzyl cellulose, and the use of other lower aliphatic alcohols, e.g. methyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-, sec.- and tert.-butyl, n-, sec.- and tert.-amyl alcohols and mixtures of alcohols, and is not restricted in regard to the proportions of alcohol and acid in the dye liquid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
